All of the following information is taken from a pamphlet made available by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
Across the nation, a variety of program and services are available to seniors. From nutrition to education, from employment to legal assistance, these
programs make it possible for many seniors to remain active and independent throughout their retirement years.
Although programs vary from state to state and even from city to city, almost all localities offer the following basic services:
NUTRITION PROGRAMS: These programs provide hot, nutritious meals to seniors either in a congregate, community setting or in the home.
Congregate meal centers, in addition to providing healthy food, offer seniors a chance to socialize and participate in various activities with their peers. In-home meal services, such as Meals on Wheels, deliver meals to those homebound because of illness or injury. In some instances, a small fee is charged or a voluntary donation may be requested.
ADULT DAY CARE CENTERS: These centers provide more intensive, specialized care for those seniors who need the constant attention or supervision of a caregiver and/or have trouble performing some basic functions of daily living, such as eating, walking and going to the toilet.
Some centers provide occupational and physical therapy. Adult day care centers are more than a blessing for caregivers. They are helpful in keeping impaired or frail seniors out of nursing homes. Additionally, some centers are equipped to care for victims of Alzheimer's disease.
SENIOR CENTERS: Like congregate meal centers, senior centers provide older Americans with a variety of social and supportive services designed to make retirement years more rewarding. Many centers offer classes on a variety of topics, as
well as recreational activities such as bridge or bingo. Some centers sponsor short day trips
to museums or other points of interest.
By helping them learn new skills and make new friends, centers are beneficial in eliminating the isolation many retirees feel. Some communities also provide transportation to the senior center and/or nutrition site. Also, senior centers can serve as an additional source of information about senior programs in your community.
LEGAL ASSISTANCE: Many localities offer legal assistance programs to help seniors with those problems which may arise in later life.
Legal aid lawyers may offer advice on drafting a will, determining eligibility for public programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Supplemental Security Income and food stamps, preparing income tax returns and establish-ing conservatorships. They also may help with various landlord/tenant difficulties.
NURSING HOME COMPLAINTS: The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program can assist nursing home residents and their family members in resolving complaints about a particular nursing home. They also can provide to those searching for a nursing home in which to place a loved one information on conditions in various facilities. Contacts are kept strictly confidential.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES: Employment programs assist seniors, not only with finding employment, but also with learning the new skills necessary to succeed in today's job market. Many such programs provide on the job training in either the public or private sector.
OTHER SERVICES: Depending on where you live, other available programs may include
- transportation for rural or homebound seniors
- housing assistance
- educational programs
- consumer assistance programs
- home repair services
- volunteer opportunities
- senior advocacy programs
- telephone reassurance
- tax assistance
SERVICES IN YOUR AREA: Many of these programs are sponsored by grants through the Older Americans Act and therefore can he located through your local Area Agency on Aging. The local offices can usually be found in your telephone directory under Aging, Health and Human Services or social Services. This brochure contains a list of all the state agencies on aging. These state offices can direct you to local resources and services
Additional information can be obtained through your local churches, senior centers, or Social Security office.
