How to obtain your annual free credit report
Starting June 1st, every resident of Texas will be able to order credit reports at no charge. A recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act will require each of the national consumer reporting companies to give citizens a free copy of their credit report, at their request, once a year. The request can be made through the web site www.annualcreditreport.com. When ordering the credit report you will need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and birth date. In order to verify your identity, you also may need to provide information that only you would know, such as the amount of your monthly mortgage payment. The Federal Trade Commission has prepared a brochure called "Your Access to Free Credit Reports" explaining your rights in this area and how to order a free report. You can view the brochure at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre34.shtm. The website www.annualcreditreport.com is the only authorized site for the free reports. Other sites or services that claim to offer a free credit report often require the consumer to buy a credit monitoring subscription or another service in order to receive the free report.
